GOP: Alarmed by Foley situation for wrong reasons
Of course, hindsight is 20-20... we have a crystal clear picture in the aggregate now about Foley's behavior than we did as things occurred incrementally over the last few years - but, I think the GOP should be taking a long hard look at the choices that were made when certain questionable behaviors surfaced. On the one hand, folks are outraged because of the implications of this scandal on the party, and rightly so. But, this in and of itself, is a bit short-sighted. If there was an incling of concern about Foley's character at any point, we've got to wonder why we didn't find a way to get him out the door sooner. As an organisation, we want the right people making the right leadership decisions and it would appear that Foley was never totally in a position to do that. That's a much greater concern for the GOP - it isn't weeding out the weak.
It's kind of like the time I was upset that my high school boyfriend dumped me because I wouldn't go all the way with him. I was really crushed, but I took some solace in my Huey Lewis and The News album and by watching Ghostbusters. It's OK because I think he's still driving the same brown car and working as a shift manager at Barry's Barbells.
